El-Aurian People
The El-Aurian home star is Auranatum, which is in the Delta Quadrant in what is now occupied Borg space. The habitable zone was the second and third planet of the system. The second planet was the original birthplace of the El-Aurian people, while the third planet was later settled and used once the race became space-faring. Both planets have several hundred millenia of history surrounding them prior to their destruction by the Borg.
El-Aurians have extended lifespans due to a cellular makeup of metaphasic energy. No El-Aurians were assimilated by the Borg due to this makeup, leaving their only choice to murder them and attempt to absorb their available technologies.
It is rumored that they may be the more evolved offshoot of the Q Continuum that chose to remain corporeal while keeping a more limited usage of their abilities. It should be noted that the Q who appeared regularly to Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Enterprise-D actually feared Guinan, even though he is/was allegedly “nearly omnipotent”.
There has never been a definitive number of El-Aurian survivors of the Borg attacks on record. The largest quantity in one place being rescued from the Lakul by the USS Enterprise-B, which was 47; among them being all three known El-Aurians in Canon (Guinan, Soren, Martus). The Lakul was misidentified as an El-Aurian ship, but it is a technological impossibility for it to be true. My speculation is that the ship was built after they were relocated to the Alpha Quadrant after the Borg attacks using local-based technology; which would explain why the ships were not warp capable.
El-Aurians generally take on the role of a native where they relocate. Since Guinan’s involvement with Starfleet and the USS Enterprise-D and USS Enterprise-E, it has become common for El-Aurians aware of Federation politics to identify themselves as El-Aurians; as many no longer feel the need to hide their origins. This does not mean that all El-Aurians are forthcoming about their heritage.
The El-Aurian/Auranatum race is hundreds of millenia old and has been what the Federation would consider “warp capable” for well over 2000 years; albeit not exactly using Federation-style warp technology. El-Aurians were the original creators of the subspace-conduit system that the Borg are now famous for using.
